Some Nonprofits Have Reason To Be Thankful

A few charity tidbits as we go into the holiday weekend:

Associated Press has a story about how there will be less clinking in those Salvation Army Kettles. Not because donations are down (which they are), but because the charity is now taking debit and credit cards.

Kettles in more than 120 cities are being rigged with wireless card readers so, if you don’t have any spare change, you can simply slide through your credit card and make a donation.

I made a few calls to South Florida Salvation Army Area Commands. Palm Beach Area Command isn’t rigging kettles with the ability to accept credit cards, but they do have aWeb site where you can donate using a credit card.

Tara Bennett, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach Area Command, said they weren’t sure how folks might react to having a credit card machine next to the kettles.

“I know there are a lot of people like to use debit cards, but by creating an online donation we are hoping they will go there,” she told me.

Charity begins at work

Jarden Consumer Solutions’ employee-funded Community Fund approved $56,975 in grants during the third quarter.

The charitable-arm of the Boca Raton-headquartered company gave $15,000 grants each toAchievement Centers for Children and Families in Delray Beach to support its hot meal program for at risk youth; Boca Helping Hands, which provides temporary meal and employment assistance to people in crisis; and Gilda’s Club in Fort Lauderdale to help those with cancer.

It also provided $4,800 to Kids@Home to help those who age out of the foster care system.

Red Cross Angels

The North County Red Cross Angels civic group gave $15,000 to the Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, to help the local organization provide relief for victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

The North County Red Cross Angels are a social and fundraising arm of the Red Cross chapter.

The event is part of a global effort to test several million people for HIV in conjunction with this year’s observation of World AIDS Day.

The thrift stores are owned and operated by AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which helps fund the medical services AHF provides.

Here’s hoping a lot more people have something to be thankful for in the coming months.
